ICE CLIMBING ON CBS...
01.23.2007CBS NEWS FILMS ICE CLIMBING IN IOWA
You may recall previous posts mentioning ice climbing on silos in Iowa. My good friend Don Briggs has gained national recognition in regards to these home-made frozen waterfalls. In addition he recently published a "how to" book for those that want to own their own ice walls.
Today, CBS News flew a film crew in from New York to capture some footage of this unique hobby. When I arrived they rapidly rigged me up with a helmet camera and let me climb. As it turns out, I did all of the technical filming of the climbing! One of the ideas behind the helmet camera is it gives the viewer a first hand perspective, and should illustrate how one stays connected to the ice.
The film crew had their work cut out for them too: they ascended a 65 foot ice covered ladder on the side of the silo. In addition, the reporter actually got rigged up with a harness, crampons, helmet and ice axes to do a take from a few feet up on the ice—which had to be a thrill for him. They handled the frigid temperatures and ice covered terrain very well.
As I understand it, this segment will be on CBS evening news sometime in February. I’ll update this post when I have a definite date.
