The Skateboarding Mom's motto: "We flip for Children's Books"

The Full Story of this years gathering in Barb Odanaka's words. The Founder of the International Society of Skateboarding Moms.

"This Mother's Day, Sunday May 8, the International Society of Skateboarding Moms will celebrate in a big way: the MIGHTY MAMA SKATE-O-RAMA, a gathering of moms on skateboards. The main event will be held at the Laguna Niguel skatepark in Orange County, Calif. but other gatherings are planned for regional events around the country and in Vancouver, British Columbia.

The Intl. Society of Skateboarding Moms was founded in 2004 and now has nearly 300 members, ages 21 to 81. Though based in Southern California, our members come from all over the U.S as well as Australia, New Zealand, England, The Netherlands, Canada, France,
Germany and Sweden.

We are homemakers, businesspeople, astronomers, legislators, psychologists, parapsychologists, teachers, homeschoolers, spa owners, clothing designers, stand-up comics, professional puppeteers,
"skate-at-home" moms, and so much more. A sampling:

Juliann Andreen, 44, of Washington D.C., is a legislative aide for Senator Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) and a mother of two adult children. Juliann is perfectly coifed and dresses in fine silks...yet shreds the skatepark like few others. She occasionally rides her skateboard to the Hart Senate Building, where the marble floors are oh-so smooth. ;-)

Wednesday Alexander, 45, of Brooklyn, NY, is a paramedic and professional puppeteer who's recently performed at the New York Comedy Club. This mother of a teen-aged boy--he doesn't skate--cruises a four-mile long stretch of bike path, rocking out to
the Queen of the Damned soundtrack.

Gale Webb, 60-something, from Sun City, CA, runs a junior amateur skateboard team and still skates (and rides motocross) despite a near-fatal parachute accident many years ago.

All the proceeds from our events go to charity. (The 2005 Mother's Day event will raise money for the OC Public Library's branch of the Orangewood Children's Home in Orange, CA.) I am the author of Skateboard Mom (Putnam, 2004) and though my book will be for sale at the Mighty Mama Skate-O-Rama, 100% of my royalties that day will go to the library at
Orangewood.

Please visit for more info and photos of some of the skate moms. p.s. I will be in New York April 22-26. Free skateboard lessons to the media."
